Boring... The writing largely suffers in its attempts to entertain and educate.

First, the good news: It's handsome, scenic and colorful, produced with a lavish flourish rare for television. Now, the bad news: It's a rompety, clompety bore.

Every time a bit of information is slipped into the script, the sound of Mr. Lucas picking up a teacher's blackboard pointer can almost be heard in the background.

You have never seen educational value so imaginatively and colorfully packaged... There is no hard sell, either in the excitement or education, but rather a classy melding of the two: live and learn, and have some fun while you`re at it.

Young Indiana could end up restoring the good name of two-fisted, swashbuckling, prime-time pulp.

Each episode tries to shoehorn in bold a history and an ethics lesson with the period dress and picturesque ports of call. The result, though visually rich, is like a fuddy-duddy theme-park ride.

The acting in Chronicles is solid, with Flanery particularly good... The first thing all this heavy-duty talent should concentrate on is turning young Jones into something more than a time-tripping name-dropper.

Young Indiana Jones is a marvelous show. The stories are engrossing, the characters well-drawn and played, and the production values are extraordinarily lush for a weekly program.

What it all adds up to tonight, unfortunately, is something akin to a very slow camel or burro ride across long stretches of arid desert. There's dialogue galore, but comparatively little action and virtually no suspense.

The narrative of this series is one of multiple riches. It's a boy's coming-of-age story, a hero quest, a travelogue, a class in multiculturalism, and a simple, solid action-adventure serial all rolled into one sprawling, seat-of-the-pants yarn.
