The story begins when a US spacecraft crashed into a lake on an unknown planet after a long flight aboard the planet. Now that everything has crashed, astronauts discover that there are a bunch of smart monkeys talking and controlling. Planet of the Apes is one of those rare films whose historical impact outweighs its quality. It's a good film, but not a classic.

It's a film to see, all right, and it does confirm Schaffner's talent. It is only that one can now see more clearly the limits of that talent, limits which are much narrower than I had hoped.
